Biofeedback is a device used to read a muscles activity. The biofeedback unit generates an audio and/or visual cue to help a person gain awareness of the pelvic floor muscles. It can be used to strengthen or help relax a muscle. Either external sensors can be placed on the muscle or an internal probe can be used during treatment. ***For children, only external sensors are used.
Biofeedback can help isolate the pelvic floor muscles for strengthening or can be used to bring awareness to tense muscles that may be causing pain.
Biofeedback has proven effective in the treatment of incontinence and pelvic pain. Physical therapy treatment to eliminate or minimize incontinence and pelvic pain is a safe, conservative approach to pelvic floor dysfunction.
